A few words about energy efficiency

In recent years, technology advances have significantly decreased energy consumption and the carbon footprint of many electronic products – a timely achievement given the growing concerns about the environment and irreparable climate change.

Why should businesses care?

Governments around the world are setting targets to meet stringent global objectives to reduce power consumption. It is therefore only a matter of time before businesses will be subject to regulation.

What about Thin clients?

The Fujitsu Siemens Computers thin clients product line is especially suitable for customers in the server-based computing sector who need low Total Cost of Ownership, space-saving solutions and high levels of security. Advantages include high availability and minimal administrative effort. Next to all this one benefits from direct advantages, such as: High level of availability, reliable desktops and minimal management and support efforts. Benefits for the environment include: less power consumption, usage of less components and a much longer life-cycle.

If you want to have an environmental friendly but reliable system, your ideal candidate is a thin client! The consumption of thin clients is at least twice as low, sometimes even more than four times lower than the consumption of corresponding PC Systems. On top of this can a thin client system be used for a longer period of time than PC Systems. That saves money!

The usage of thin clients by organisations can lead to savings of over 90% on en energy cost, compared to a standard PC. This makes thin clients a major component for commercial and government programs that contribute to a better environment.

 

Energy-savings with thin clients

One part of the products Fujitsu Siemens Computers makes are thin clients, with which it offers one of the most power efficient solutions on the market. These clients experience a rapid increase in popularity as an alternative for standard desktop and laptop PC's. Besides energy savings of course aspects such as lower investments and maintenance cost helps an organisation to make this environmental friendly choice.

The well-know standard PC usages in average about 280 Watts of electricity, whereas a HP thin client usages in the same period of time 30 - 50 Watt, but a FSC Futro A series uses only 8,5 Watt (peak usage), all in one a saving of around 90%. For example; an organisation which replaces 3.500 PC's with FSC Futro S500 systems achieves a saving of over Eur 150.000 per year, based on a KWH price of Eur 0.075.

Every ones choice makes a difference

Confronted with rapid increases in energy-cost, the apparent legislation for running down energy consumption and the effort to operate more environmental friendly, many organisation choose to save energy by using thin  clients (i.e. CVS, Bed Bath & Beyond, Goodyear, AutoZone, Kroger Co.).

Next to savings in the continuous power consumption thin clients propose also other advantages compared to traditional PC's. As such there are no moving parts like harddisk and fans and also these do not produce a lot of heat which saves on your cooling. Of course savings will differ per situation but at least you will have a nice, friendly and quiet environment.

The manufacturing of thin clients also costs less energy and materials as there are less components needed to make a thin client. Thin clients are less bad for the environmet as these use less transport capacity (about 40% less in weight) and the systems last about 50% longer which generates less computer waste.
